Mahan's research rocks! A VERY detailed analysis and on a solid foundation of scholarship.On the negative side, sentences as long as paragraphs and a rather turgid prose dates this study as belonging to another generation.
Solid research, insightful analysis and great footnotes. I'd recommend this book for any serious student of naval warfare and operations as well as the well meaning dilettante.

I love the American Revolution, thoroughly enjoy reading about it, this is a little different. The United States did not really have a Navy so the conflict is actually between the British and French. It was also not confined to our borders but fought more in the Caribbean, Atlantic, and Mediterranean. Both sides did well and both sides blundered and you can see this in Mahan’s work. It appears to be well researched and does not lean in the favor of either combatant nation. It is very good for people interested in naval operations as well as the American Revolution so if that fits, pick it up. If you are looking for a romantic thriller or something extremely pro-American then this is not for you. I enjoyed it.
If you are interested in navy history, and want to learn a new language, this is your book! The book is written in the English language of over a hundred years ago so reading starts out difficult but you soon learn the terms of the times along with lots of naval terminology.
